The signs worth knowing before the damage.
Live termites are rarely the first thing a homeowner sees. By the time a swarm appears indoors the colony has usually been established for a season or more, so the earlier indicators are the ones worth learning.
Mud shelter tubes
Pencil-width earthen tubes running up the outside of piers, stumps and foundation walls. They are the colony's covered route between the soil and the timber, and they are the clearest sign visible from outside.
Blistered or rippled paint
Paint lifting on door frames and skirting where moisture sits behind the timber. It reads as a damp problem, which is why it is so often missed until the frame is probed.
Frass and fine droppings
Sawdust-like droppings below a damaged fence post, deck board or architrave. Fine, gritty and usually in a small pile that reappears after you sweep it away.
Clicking inside the wall
Soldier termites bang their heads against the timber to signal the colony, which carries as a faint clicking on a still night. Worth taking seriously rather than writing off as the house settling.

Soil, mulch and garden beds banked against the slab edge give a colony a concealed route straight past the inspection zone. Keeping that edge clear and visible is the single easiest thing a homeowner can do.
Move firewood away from the house
Stacked firewood against an external wall is both a food source and cover. Store it well away from the building rather than under the eaves or against the cladding.
Fix leaks quickly
Subterranean termites follow moisture. Leaking taps and air-conditioning condensate drains keep the soil and adjacent timber damp enough to attract and sustain a colony.
